Jorge Castillo: OK snow birds, you've just driven the family sedan 1,800 miles from somewhere in the middle of Iowa. Your vehicle is covered with road salt, mud and a few clumps of good old Iowa manure.

Glenn Lindgren: In short, your ride looks like hell.

Nicaragua Car Wash Sign

Raúl Musibay: Well never fear, once you get to Miami your troubles are over.

Glenn Lindgren: Don't make the mistake of looking for a large, mechanized car wash like they have back home.

Look for signs like this all over Miami.
Raúl Musibay: And forget about those self-service places.

Jorge Castillo: What you need is a good Nicaraguan car wash. Just travel down any of the major thoroughfares...

Raúl Musibay: ...Bird Road for example...

Jorge Castillo: ...and you'll see many examples of this great Miami invention. You'll normally spot them next to a gas station or parking lot. For as little as ten dollars, you can have your car washed by hand by four of the friendliest guys you'll ever meet.

Guys Hanging out at Car Wash
Hey, its a laid-back atmosphere.
Glenn Lindgren: For as little as $10, you can get a complete hand wash.

Jorge Castillo: For about $35, you can get the hand wash plus hand waxing -- a "detail" job that will cost you two or three times as much in most major cities.

Raúl Musibay: They do it all, inside and out - including the carpets and upholstery.

Miami Car Wash Guide

Jorge Castillo: So make the car wash one of your first stops. You'll be surprised at how nicely your Iowa bulge-mobile cleans up. Soon you'll be tooling down Biscayne Boulevard looking just like a native.

Glenn Lindgren: Here's another tip. If your snow-birding is going to keep you in Florida for a month or more, lose the Iowa plate on the front of your car. Get one of those "I Love Miami" plates instead!
