Glenn Lindgren: If you ask most people in Miami to take you to the Bird Road Art District, about nine in ten will just give you a puzzled look, shrug their shoulders, and walk on.

Jorge Castillo: That one person who knows about the District will probably take you to a collection of what look like oversized storage units

Glenn Lindgren: Only they now house stores selling everything from antiques to wicker furniture.

Raúl Musibay: That guy is going to tell you: "This is it. The Bird Road Art District!"

Jorge Castillo: The problem is, there is a lost more to the Bird Road Art District -- we tell you all about it here.

Raúl Musibay: Which brings us back to that industrial-looking complex of shops. We realized in our travels that the center, officially called "Lakeshore Industrial Park," has a certain charm and attractiveness of its own.

Jorge Castillo: The collection of four long buildings that makes up Lakeshore Industrial Park sits on the corner of SW 48th Street and SW 72nd Avenue just to the east of Tropical Park and very near the University of Miami.

Glenn Lindgren: The stores here are an eclectic mix of the arty and the near arty. The center is dominated by antique stores: Ody's, Three Lions, Gilbert's and Xenia's are prominent landmarks as are Antiques International and Antique Furniture Rescue, a business that specializes in restoration.

Jorge Castillo: A favorite with local interior designers, the stores are a great place to find antique furniture and textiles.

Glenn Lindgren: On the modern side, Bijoux Design Creations is a bead store that caters to those who enjoy making their own jewelry.

Raúl Musibay: The store has everything from glass beads from Czechoslovakia to Swarovski crystals

Glenn Lindgren: My mother swears by them!

Jorge Castillo: J&J Rattan has a huge selection of those South Florida favorites: wicker and rattan furniture that will look great in your Florida room or anywhere in your home.

Raúl Musibay: One room is full of wicker baskets and the indoor plants – including orchids – that will help brighten up your home.

Jorge Castillo: On a search for plates and serving dishes for our latest cookbook, we found several interesting items at two of the shops.

Glenn Lindgren: At Indo Nouveau, a store that features modern Indonesian style furniture, we picked up some nice mahogany accent pieces. The store features numerous examples of mahogany wood furniture, known for its hardness and durability.

Raúl Musibay: Fabulous Mexicrafts has a great selection of Mexican and Spanish style plates and pottery. Two of their items were featured in our book.

Jorge Castillo: The center also has a few clothing stores, most notably one selling designer shoes at less than designer prices.

Glenn Lindgren: For the curious visitor or adventurous native, this most visible feature of the Bird Road Art District is worth a visit.

HOURS: Individual store hours vary, although many stores are closed on Sundays and several on Mondays. Most stores open after 11:00 a.m.. Saturday afternoons are a good time to visit and discover your favorite shops.
